Democratic lobbyist and attorney Nathan Daschle has voiced concern over the long-term consequences of former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, warning they mirror mistakes from the past.

“These tariffs feel like a replay of history—we saw something very similar right before the Great Depression,” Daschle told Sky News Australia. “Markets hate uncertainty and confusion, and that’s exactly what’s been injected into the system.”

He continued, “We already know the effects of imposing sweeping tariffs on global trade—it hurts everyone involved. There’s no credible economic theory that supports Trump’s approach.”

Despite warnings like Daschle’s, Trump’s popularity among voters appears unaffected—even bolstered—by his tariff moves.

A recent poll conducted by DailyMail.com in collaboration with J.L. Partners shows Trump’s approval rating holding steady at 54 percent—matching his all-time high. The poll surveyed 1,002 registered voters between April 10 and April 14, just days after Trump reversed his decision to impose sweeping tariffs.

Initially, Trump proposed broad, across-the-board tariffs and increased reciprocal duties on most trading partners. However, he scaled back the plan, opting for a 10 percent tariff rate and pausing further increases—except for those targeting China.

While the announcement triggered market turbulence, public reaction remained largely unmoved. “Despite the backlash and confusion, voters seem to reward Trump for the boldness and decisiveness they expected when they elected him,” said pollster James Johnson.

The data reveals interesting demographic trends: Trump remains most popular among younger voters, with those aged 18 to 29 giving him a 64 percent approval rating. Support remains strong across other age groups as well—54 percent for seniors aged 65+, 52 percent among 30 to 49-year-olds, and 51 percent in the 50 to 64 bracket.

Gender disparities persist. Men support Trump at a rate of 61 percent, while just 47 percent of women approve—a 14-point gap.

Racial differences also emerge in the polling: 57 percent of white voters approve of Trump, compared to 46 percent of Hispanic voters and 43 percent of Black voters.

Interestingly, while Trump has traditionally polled better among voters without a college degree, his latest numbers show increased support from college graduates—56 percent, up from 47 percent earlier in April. Meanwhile, approval among non-graduates has slipped slightly to 52 percent, down from 57 percent.

Trump continues to enjoy overwhelming support among Republicans, with a 94 percent approval rating. Among Independents, he stands at 48 percent, while only 22 percent of Democrats express approval.

Despite the controversies surrounding his tariff policies, Trump’s base seems resilient, signaling that bold—even divisive—moves may continue to play well with much of the electorate.
