Desmond Meade is an Attorney and President of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition. He ran for Governor in 2016 in order to increase awareness of the language in the Florida Constitution which bars anyone with a felony conviction from voting. In fact, 1.6 million ex-felons have been stripped of their right to vote due to this law, with numbers as high as 22% of African American adults in Florida being denied their right to cast a vote. Desmond’s grassroots campaign aims to remove the impediment that felony convictions have on every aspect of life for deserving citizens and will not stop until this issue is fixed.
Desmond Meade was working in Philadelphia but moved home to Florida in 2010. His past work experience and passion for the movement propelled him into action. He started helping people with voting rights and registering voters because he had the experience. His life changed one day when he was at a voter registration event. He noticed that all the workers were white even though the place was located in a black neighborhood. This made him feel like no one cared about his people so he decided to make a change on his own, making him into a leader who is helping others fight for their rights.
