Malcolm Little (May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965), also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (/ˌæləˈhɑːdʒ/; often simplified to Malcolm X) or simply Malcolm ( /mælˈɑːk/), was an American Muslim minister and a human rights activist. He is best known for his controversial leadership in the Nation of Islam (NOI) from the late 1950s until his assassination in 1965. After four troubled years with the Nation of Islam, he left it in March 1964 after being silenced for 90 days by its leaders, and returned to his native Harlem, where he founded Muslim Mosque, Inc., dedicated to inspiring African Americans to improve their communities through self-help and education.
