The Azov battalion are a special unit of the new National Guard created in 2014 specifically to counter the Russia-backed insurgency. They include experienced hardcore fighters who believe Ukraine should form a new ethnostate free of Russian influence.

This battalion was formed by local residents, who are fighting to defend their country and families. Many of their own families have been killed in Russian air strikes.
