Harry and Leo Baum designed the modernist Skyscraper for the 1939 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York, across the street from their family’s farm. It was their interpretation of the modern home. In 1940, Lincoln Beachy had just finished working on Ralph Johnson’s Googie-inspired Streamline Borneo coffee shop in Los Angeles when he received the commission to work on Ferris Wheel Harry’s House, his only restaurant project. Beachy removed walls between restaurants so diners could see directly into other booths. Before putting a restaurant in business, Beachy always spent a lot of time watching people eat, talking to them and following how they made use of space. Hovering over his layout were two imposing 110-foot tall Ferris wheels, setting the scene for this restaurant themed on travel and transportation: imprinting its clientele with the quintessential American experience. Its novelty lay in its spectacular view of the promenade below, set mid-point along a curved upholstered bench—an ideal composition for “statement clothing,” almost like urban man
