Buccaneers Advised to Bench Embattled Starter for Undrafted LB

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ struggles on defense are deeper than they appear, suggesting a major overhaul rather than a quick fix. Apart from a few standout players, the defense is underperforming, leaving room for a shake-up that could start with changes in the linebacker lineup.

One potential move could be to bench starting linebacker K.J. Britt, who has struggled significantly in pass coverage, and replace him with J.J. Russell, a young undrafted linebacker in his third year. Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder recently highlighted Britt’s poor performance, noting his low coverage grade of 34.9 on Pro Football Focus (PFF) as of November 11. Russell, on the other hand, had a solid showing recently against the Chiefs and has earned praise from head coach Todd Bowles, possibly indicating a shift in Bowles’ plans.

Britt’s recent stats emphasize his struggles, as he has failed to make any major defensive plays during Tampa Bay’s current four-game losing streak, with no interceptions, forced fumbles, or notable stops. His overall PFF grade for the season stands at just 44.3, among the lowest for NFL starting linebackers. By contrast, Russell, though initially undrafted due to concerns about his size and athleticism, has consistently shown effort and reliability. After a stellar college career at Memphis, where he was an All-AAC selection with 123 tackles in 2021, he joined the Buccaneers in 2022 and has steadily increased his game experience.

Financially, both Britt and Russell are low-risk options. Britt is in the final season of his four-year contract worth $3.74 million, while Russell is wrapping up a two-year contract worth $1.855 million. This flexibility makes changes to the lineup viable without significant financial setbacks.

Yet, the Bucs’ defensive problems may not be solely about the players on the field. Todd Bowles, who serves as both head coach and defensive coordinator, could be facing criticism for the team’s downward trend in defense. Tampa Bay ranked 10th in defense in 2022, slipped to 23rd in 2023, and currently ranks 31st through ten games in 2024. It’s becoming clear that for the Buccaneers to revive their defense, adjustments might be needed on the sidelines as well as on the field.
