Veteran US Pollster J. Ann Selzer Retires After Iowa Poll Controversy

J. Ann Selzer, a renowned figure in American polling, announced her retirement from election polling on Sunday. Selzer revealed plans to explore new ventures and opportunities after her final pre-election poll in Iowa inaccurately predicted the 2024 presidential outcome.

The Des Moines Register’s Iowa Poll, conducted under Selzer’s leadership since 1997, had been a trusted barometer of Iowa voters’ preferences. In the final poll before the election, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris was shown leading Republican Donald Trump by three points. However, Trump won the state decisively, with a 13-point margin of victory. Selzer acknowledged the mistake, referring to it as a “big miss.”

Despite this misstep, the Iowa Poll, established in 1943, has a long history of accurate forecasts. Selzer’s oversight during multiple presidential elections cemented her reputation as one of the nation’s top pollsters. Over her tenure, there was only one previous instance where the poll failed to predict the winner correctly.

In an op-ed for The Des Moines Register, Selzer clarified that her decision to retire had been made well before the 2024 election. “Over a year ago, I informed the Register that I would not renew my contract when it expired in 2024, as I transition to other ventures and opportunities,” she wrote.

Following the 2024 election, The Des Moines Register announced plans to reform the Iowa Poll. Kristin Roberts, chief content officer for Gannett Media, the newspaper’s parent company, admitted to shortcomings in the poll’s final results. “Our mission is to provide trusted news and content to our readers and the public,” Roberts told CNN. “We failed to deliver on that promise with the last Iowa Poll, which did not accurately reflect the election outcome.”

The Iowa Poll will continue under a restructured framework, aiming to rebuild public trust and maintain its historical significance in the political landscape.
