Donald Trump Sues Des Moines Register Over Alleged Election Interference in Polling

 Former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the Des Moines Register, its chief pollster J. Ann Selzer, her firm, and the newspaper’s parent company, Gannett. The lawsuit alleges that Selzer’s polling, which showed Kamala Harris with a surprising lead ahead of the 2024 election, was part of a deliberate effort to manipulate the outcome in favor of his rival.

Trump’s legal team accuses the newspaper of “brazen election interference” and violations of consumer protection laws, escalating his ongoing battle with media outlets critical of him. The lawsuit, filed in Iowa’s Polk County on Monday, underscores Trump’s intent to challenge the press as he prepares to return to the White House.

This legal move comes shortly after ABC News settled a $15 million defamation case with Trump over coverage by its anchor George Stephanopoulos. The settlement was a rare courtroom victory for the former president, who has previously lost lawsuits against The New York Times and CNN. Trump is also pursuing a $10 billion claim against CBS.

Throughout his campaign, Trump repeatedly criticized the media, threatening to revoke network broadcasting licenses and urging Congress to dismantle legislation safeguarding press freedoms.

The Iowa lawsuit, first reported by Fox News Digital, invokes the state’s Consumer Fraud Act, which prohibits deceptive practices in advertising or sales. Trump’s team claims Selzer’s poll—showing Harris leading by three points in Iowa—was intentionally skewed to create a false sense of momentum for the Democratic candidate. Trump ultimately won Iowa by 13 points, highlighting a 16-point disparity between the poll and the final results.

“This was not a case of faulty methodology but rather a deliberate attempt to mislead voters,” Trump’s attorneys alleged. They argued that the poll painted an “illusion of inevitability” for Harris to influence voter behavior.

“Instead, the November 5 election delivered a decisive mandate for President Trump, both in the Electoral College and the popular vote,” they wrote, calling the result a rejection of what they termed a “radical socialist agenda.”

Selzer, once regarded as a gold standard in polling, announced her retirement just weeks after the election. Trump’s lawyers labeled her exit as “a disgrace,” claiming it was prompted by her alleged role in the polling controversy.

“Left-wing pollsters have been manipulating electoral outcomes through biased polling with unacceptable error rates,” they argued.

A spokesperson for the Des Moines Register, Lark-Marie Anton, defended the publication and Selzer’s work. “We have released the full data and methodology of the pre-election poll and stand by our reporting. This lawsuit is baseless,” she said in a statement.

Election law expert Rick Hasen of UCLA predicted that Trump’s lawsuit would likely fail. However, Trump continues to wage legal battles against multiple media outlets.

Just days before the election, Trump sued CBS News for $10 billion, alleging that an interview with Harris was deceptively edited to favor her campaign. His team has also issued legal threats to The Daily Beast, The New York Times, and Penguin Random House, while filing a Federal Election Commission complaint accusing The Washington Post of providing illegal in-kind contributions to Harris’s campaign through favorable coverage.
